Which Fantasy Writer are You?

Found at Grasping for the Wind: a little quiz called Which Fantasy Writer are You?

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you?...

China Miéville (b. 1972)

9 High-Brow, 11 Violent, -13 Experimental and -3 Cynical!

Congratulations! You are High-Brow, Violent, Traditional and Romantic! These concepts are defined below.

China Miéville writes in the British fantasy tradition of authors like Mervyn Peake and Michael Moorcock, a tradition which is a little darker than the Tolkien kind, but Miéville is also a great renewer, as he has taken care to challenge, for example, race-related (or, to be exact, species-related) stereotypes in fantasy. His great breakthrough came with the award-winning novel Perdido Street Station (2000), which is set in the sprawling city of New Crobuzon in the secondary world Bas-Lag. Apart from its urban setting, Perdido Street Station also differ from Tolkien-style fantasy by taking place in an era reminiscent of the Victorian age rather than the typical quasi-medieval setting of so-called high fantasy. This means that Miéville has the opportunity to explore his socialist beliefs in a fantasy environment, even if both Perdido Street Station and its two sequels also feature monsters, adventures and such.

Setting his book in a rather dictatorical society and occasionally spinning his sories around resistance against an oppressive government means that Miéville's books sometimes contain rather horrible violence, made all the scarier because it's often conducted legally by a ruling government. This also makes the boks rather romantic; although the struggle is difficult, the struggle continues and whether you are a socialist like Miéville or not, it's easy to sympathize with the message that the world can be changed for the better. It should also be pointed out that although Miéville is often inventive and has a love for spicing up his prose with archaic words, his books are, narratively speaking, traditional adventure stories. Actually, Miéville has made a point of taking genres such as the pirate story and the Western story and retelling them in a fantasy environment.

Still, Miéville has brought fantasy to new literary heights and can be said to represent hope for the genre's future.

You are also a lot like Michael Moorcock.

If you want something more gentle, try Susan Cooper.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, Orson Scott Card.

Your score

This is how to interpret your score: Your attitudes have been measured on four different scales, called 1) High-Brow vs. Low-Brow, 2) Violent vs. Peaceful, 3) Experimental vs. Traditional and 4) Cynical vs. Romantic. Imagine that when you were born, you were in a state of innocence, a tabula rasa who would have scored zero on each scale. Since then, a number of circumstances (including genetical, cultural and environmental factors) have pushed you towards either end of these scales. If you're at 45 or -45 you would be almost entirely cynical, low-brow or whatever. The closer to zero you are, the less extreme your attitude. However, you should always be more of either (eg more romantic than cynical). Please note that even though High-Brow, Violent, Experimental and Cynical have positive numbers (1 through 45) and their opposites negative numbers (-1 through -45), this doesn't mean that either quality is better. All attitudes have their positive and negative sides, as explained below.

High-Brow vs. Low-Brow

You received 9 points, making you more High-Brow than Low-Brow. Being high-browed in this context refers to being more fascinated with the sort of art that critics and scholars tend to favour, rather than the best-selling kind. At their best, high-brows are cultured, able to appreciate the finer nuances of literature and not content with simplifications. At their worst they are, well, snobs.

Violent vs. Peaceful

You received 11 points, making you more Violent than Peaceful. Please note that violent in this context does not mean that you, personally, are prone to violence. This scale is a measurement of a) if you are tolerant to violence in fiction and b) whether you see violence as a means that can be used to achieve a good end. If you are, and you do, then you are violent as defined here. At their best, violent people are the heroes who don't hesitate to stop the villain threatening innocents by means of a good kick. At their worst, they are the villains themselves.

Experimental vs. Traditional

You received -13 points, making you more Traditional than Experimental. Your position on this scale indicates if you're more likely to seek out the new and unexpected or if you are more comfortable with the familiar, especially in regards to culture. Note that traditional as defined here does not equal conservative, in the political sense. At their best, traditional people don't change winning concepts, favouring storytelling over empty poses. At their worst, they are somewhat narrow-minded.

Cynical vs. Romantic

You received -3 points, making you more Romantic than Cynical. Your position on this scale indicates if you are more likely to be wary, suspicious and skeptical to people around you and the world at large, or if you are more likely to believe in grand schemes, happy endings and the basic goodness of humankind. It is by far the most vaguely defined scale, which is why you'll find the sentence "you are also a lot like x" above. If you feel that your position on this scale is wrong, then you are probably more like author x. At their best, romantic people are optimistic, willing to work for a good cause and inspiring to their peers. At their worst, they are easily fooled and too easily lead.

Meme: What We Read

This is a fun meme I first saw at The Written World by Kailana and over at The Book Smugglers.

1. What author do you own the most books by? PG Wodehouse

2. What book do you own the most copies of?
Our apartment is too small to keep duplicates. However, I have two copies each of:

3. What fictional character are you secretly in love with? Valentine Corbett in:

4. What book have you read more than any other?

5. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old? I'm unsure, but most likely:

6. What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year? Generally I don't finish books I don't like, but I'd have to say Cherished by Elizabeth Thornton or Light of the Moon by Luanne Rice.

7. What is the best book you’ve read in the past year? I couldn't pick only one. Maybe Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian.

8. If you could tell everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be? Only one?! Wow. I'll have to think about that one. I think my choice would be: To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

9. What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read? I absolutely can't stand Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.

10. Do you prefer the French or the Russians? Haven't read any of the Russians, so it's the French by default.

11. Shakespeare, Milton or Chaucer? Shakespeare

12. Austen or Eliot? Neither. I like the Brontes.

13. What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading? Classics.

14. What is your favorite novel? This is probably similar to #8, but I think it would be either: Uncle Fred in Springtime by PG Wodehouse or any of the Bertie and Jeeves novels.

15. Play? Midsummer Night's Dream

16. Poem? Mab in Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare:

O, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes
In shape no bigger than an agate-stone
On the fore-finger of an alderman,
Drawn with a team of little atomies
Over men’s noses as they lie asleep;
Her wagon-spokes made of long spinners’ legs,
The cover of the wings of grasshoppers,
The traces of the smallest spider’s web,
The collars of the moonshine’s watery beams,
Her whip of cricket’s bone; the lash of film;
Her waggoner a small grey-coated gnat,
Not half so big as a round little worm
Prick’d from the lazy finger of a maid:
Her chariot is an empty hazel-nut
Made by the joiner squirrel or an old grub,
Time out o’ mind the fairies’ coachmakers.
And in this state she gallops night by night
Through lovers’ brains, and then they dream of love;
O’er courtiers’ knees, that dream on court’sies straight,
O’er lawyers’ fingers, who straight dream on fees,
O’er ladies ‘ lips, who straight on kisses dream,
Which oft the angry Mab with blisters plagues,
Because their breaths with sweetmeats tainted are:
Sometime she gallops o’er a courtier’s nose,
And then dreams he of smelling out a suit;
And sometime comes she with a tithe-pig’s tail
Tickling a parson’s nose as a’ lies asleep,
Then dreams, he of another benefice:
Sometime she driveth o’er a soldier’s neck,
And then dreams he of cutting foreign throats,
Of breaches, ambuscadoes, Spanish blades,
Of healths five-fathom deep; and then anon
Drums in his ear, at which he starts and wakes,
And being thus frighted swears a prayer or two
And sleeps again. This is that very Mab
That plaits the manes of horses in the night,
And bakes the elflocks in foul sluttish hairs,
Which once untangled, much misfortune bodes:
This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs,
That presses them and learns them first to bear,
Making them women of good carriage:
This is she—"

17. Essay? Anything by David Sedaris, but especially Holidays on Ice.

18. Short Story? Anything by Edgar Allan Poe

19. Non Fiction?

20. Graphic Novel? Haven't read any of these, unfortunately.

21. Science Fiction? Catherine Asaro's Skolian books, Linnea Sinclair, anything by Robert Heinlein, Scott Westerfeld's Risen Empire duology.

22. Who is your favorite writer? Living Writer? Don't have just one, there are several: Patricia McKillip & Jane Yolen, Katherine Kurtz & Anne Bishop, Jacqueline Carey. Deceased writers? PG Wodehouse & Robert Louis Stevenson.

23. Who is the most over rated writer alive today? Um..Stephanie Meyer?

24. Best Memoir?

25. Best History?

26. Best mystery or Noir? Any of Laura Joh Rowland's Sano Ichiro

Newest release, 2008

Or else anything in Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma series:

July 2009 release

27. What is your desert island book? Any omnibus collection of PG Wodehouse books. Anything off of my keeper shelves.

28. Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for literature? Uh..no opinion. I read mostly "ghetto" er..I mean genre literature, which as all Nobel panelists know is never worthy of such on honor. *SNORT*

29. What book would you most like to see made into a movie? The Risen Empire duology by Scott Westerfeld.

30. What book would you least like to see made into a movie? No opinion.

31. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character. Generally I don't remember my dreams. Except the ones that come true.

32. And ... what are you reading right now?

Bookshelf meme

I found this on A Reader's Respite but the meme originated on A Striped Armchair. The questions relate to books as treasured objects, physical beings whose very prescence on our shelves bring us joy and contentment and remind their owners of past history. My answers to this meme will be colored by the fact that I was a military brat and then a military wife, so for many many years the only books I carried from pillar to post were the childhood treasures gifted to me by various family members and some genre titles that particularly captured my heart.

Images found on: Amazon, B & N, Bully's Comics, and Fantastic Fiction

The books that’ve been on your shelves the longest:

Both were gifts to me from my mother and her family when I was an infant.

A book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time, etc.):

I have a collection of Penguin hardcover & paperback copies of UK published PG Wodehouse titles, gifted to me by my grandfather. The oldest one is dated 1953. I can't find images of the covers I have, but this image if one of the newer covers.

A gift to me upon my 5th birthday from my father.

A book you acquired in some interesting way (gift, serendipity in a used bookstore, prize, etc.):

The hardcover edition was gifted to me by my grandfather on my 11th birthday, less than three years before he died.

A book that’s been with you to the most places:

All of the above books have moved across the United States multiple times, but I guess if you want to be technical the De Angeli & Tudor books have the most mileage because they've moved with me since I was a baby & thus have years' more of mileage.

The most recent addition to your shelves:

Title is Mistress of the Art of Death.

Tagged: CindyS, Annie Kelleher and KristieJ.

The Rules
1. Tag 3-5 people, so the fun keeps going!
2. Leave a comment at the original post at A Striped Armchair, so that Eva can collect everyone’s answers.
3. If you leave a comment and link back to Eva as the meme’s creator, she will enter you in a book giveaway contest! She has a whole shelf devoted to giveaway books that you’ll be able to choose from, or a bookmooch point if you prefer.
4. Remember that this is all about enjoying books as physical objects, so feel free to describe the exact book you’re talking about, down to that warping from being dropped in the bath water…
5. Make the meme more fun with visuals! Covers of the specific edition you’re talking about, photos of your bookshelves, etc.

I found this meme over on Galley Cat, the book industry blog. The idea is to take book titles and arrange them in story format. For today's purposes, ie: Thursday 13, I used thirteen books to make a story. All titles taken out of my TBR bookcase. Each underlined section is a different title.

The perfect kiss beguiled a gentleman by any other name to distraction. Heaven forbids her secret fantasy of one night of sin and magic at midnight, but she dreams anyway. Once a bride she cherished the madcap marriage that gave them shimmering spendor and a perfect love.

This week is a last minute list of some of the various things I managed to accomplish today.

1. Scrubbed out the bathroom

2. Good thing I did because the painter came by today to put the first coat over the primer.

3. Sorted through two of the bookcases. I now have enough shelf space so that everything stands upright. No extra piles on top or in front of books.

4. Also sorted through my keepers and decided some of them have to go too. Especially if I can't remember reading them or why I wanted to keep them in the first place.

5. Surfed the 'net looking for lists of who's been named to the Olympic road cycling teams in many of the European countries. Somehow I expected there to be a nice convenient list someone else would be kind enough to post. Uh yesh- I went back looking for the legs photo for #7 & the LIST is here.

6. Then again, I was sidetracked looking at photos of cyclists and China on Velo News.

7. Um. Gerald Ciolek's legs are YUMMY. Just sayin'. Thought the photo was on Velo News, but now I can't find it.

8. Beijing appears to be quite smoggy and the air pollution seems intractable.

9. I read somewhere that the Chinese gov't shut factories down for weeks to improve air quality. As much as I applaud their efforts, a gov't that can do that in the first place and be obeyed? Frightens me.

10. Washed dried and folded three loads of laundry.

11. Made dinner.

12. Picked Anime Queen from the Golden Arches.

13. Finally remembered that today is Thursday and I need to put up a post!! It was only 11:40 pm. I refuse to admit I might be disorganized or a procrastinator.

For the past two days, plus today and tomorrow, we' have a crew in the kitchen and bathroom tearing up and replacing the floors. Multiple saws and drills and hammering, ripping out and tearing up and gluing and caulking. They seem to have torn out all of my brain cells and motivation to post. I remind myself that the end result will be well worth it, but the intermediate process is stressful.

1. Writer's block

2.Half of our kitchen floor is being torn up and the reconstruction noise is driving me batty

3. Writer's block

4. Piles and stacks and towers of kitchen items are drowning me

5. Writer's block

6. My vacuum is calling me. The dust and debris and the musty smell rising from the crawl space is awful. I need to clean.

7. Writer's block

8. Our parakeets have more to say than I do

9. Writer's block

10. I'd rather be on the beach

11. Writer's block

12. Or taking a nap

13. All done!

Thursday 13 #42: Dark Moon Defender; Sharon Shinn

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Thursday 13 originated here. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! Click link in the title above to go to a list of other Thirteeners, compiled by Technorati. If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in the comments. It’s easy and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well. I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things.

1.Dark Moon Rider is the third book in the Twelve Houses series written by Sharon Shinn. Available in both hardcover and mass market formats.

2. First title in the series is a Mystic and Rider. Second title in the series, The Thirteenth House.

3. While the first two volumes touch on the religious intolerance sweeping Gillengaria, this third novel delineates it much more clearly. Like our contemporary world, a combination of true belief, keeping up appearances, fear and apathy combine to spread a belief system which feeds our basest behaviors and turns us against each other in a time of need.

4. Into this cheery scenario toss two young ladies, sent off to the Daughters' Convent, far from their home and with no one to look out for them but each other. The language is different, the customs are different, and it appears that there may be odd events going on in the convent and nearby town. You can always depend on the blood ties of kinship to keep one safe though. Right?

5. King's Rider Justin has been sent to the little town to spy on the activities of the Daughters. Find a good cover, hunker down and keep his ears and eyes open. Stay out of trouble, don't cause trouble, send reports back to the capital city. Er..and keep away from the ladies. Especially THOSE ladies.

6. Question: if you don't really believe what they're trying to teach you, will the Goddess know and get her revenge? Or will your true Goddess protect and keep you? Even if you're far from her?

7. Is it possible for young soldiers to follow orders all the time? Even if they've no supervising sergeant/officer nearby?

8. Coralinda Gisseltess, sister to one Halchon Gisseltess, who happens to be one of those Marlords trying to overthrow the king, is the equivalent of the abbess at the convent. The fact that she actively advoctes racism greed and intolerance beneath honeyed words is distrubingly overlooked by many of those who ought to be paying attention.

9. Actually, the spread of the belief system in this book reminded me of Nazism in the 1930's and WW II. The Balkans. Sudan. Rwanda. Human beings the world over seem to think,"So long as those people (whoever they might be), aren't my neighbors or my family, who cares what happens to them?? I've bills to pay and a life to lead. Let someone else help them."

10. The thing that I noticed immediately, that is- when I read the short story in A Queen in Winter and it came up again in this book: why didn't Coralinda's enemies, like Justin or Senneth or Tayse or any number of others who watched her hunt for magic, realize that Coralinda herself was one of those she purportedly wanted to get rid of? What made her gift better or different than that of those she perecuted?

11. And another thing: it should have been obvious to a thinking character that Coralinda and her brother Halchon were working in tandem, with similar gifts and goals, to acheive a political end: putting one or both of them on the throne. It seems that this was doubted though. That the prevailing outlook was to hope that Coralinda and Halchon presented two separate problems. At the same time.

12. Love blooms in the most unlikely of situations.

13. Excellent book. Will stand alone, but would be best appreciated in the context of the series.

Thursday 13 #30-Around the Capitol Building June 2007

The Capitol Building, Washington DCPhoto courtesy of Webshots.

About five weeks ago the kids and I went downtown so the Graduate could sit through a job interview at an environmental NGO on Capitol Hill. Link to info about Capitol Hill as a neighborhood, as opposed to what you hear about in the news, HERE. The rest of us walked a few blocks away and sat on a bench in the shade to see what could be seen. It was a Wednesday between 5:40 and 6:45 pm. He was offered the job but ended up declining it due to commute problems. He was bummed 'cuz it sounded fun, but the hours were bad. Even though he's 18 I was not comfortable with the thought that he'd be downtown as late as 10 pm nightly. Fortunately he agreed with me!

Quiz Time!

Via Marg at Reading Adventures, I took this little quiz & it came up with the following:

You're The Things They Carried!

by Tim O'Brien

Harsh and bitter, you tell it like it is. This usually comes in short,
dramatic spurts of spilling your guts in various ways. You carry a heavy load, and this
has weighed you down with all the horrors that humanity has to offer. Having seen and
done a great deal that you aren't proud of, you have no choice but to walk forward,
trudging slowly through ongoing mud. In the next life, you will come back as a water
buffalo.

Take the Book Quiz
at the Blue Pyramid.

Quite a downer aren't I??

Guess these books

This meme has also been done at Jenster's and at Tara's and other places as well, but it's cute & fun. So here we go:

1. Grab the nearest book.

2. Open to page 123.

3. Find the fifth sentence.

4. Post the text of the next four sentences on your blog along with these instructions.

5. Don't you dare dig around for that "cool" or "intellectual" book on your shelves. (I know you were thinking about it.) Just pick up whatever is closest.

I grabbed a couple of books off the top of Mt. TBR.

Book One:

"As for zoological gardens...do they not allow men to better understand and thus preserve unfamiliar and exotic species?"

"I only know what the animals feel."

"I concede that no one should be able to guess their emotions better than one of your profession. But in the case where animals are held in captivity, common sense tells us that making the creatures more comfortable and helping tham adapt to their new situation is by far the most compassionate and prudent approach."

"Prudent," he repeated.

Book Two:

She was shatteringly diappointed that their affair was not to be.

And last, but by no means least, the more she thought of those moments in the wood, the more she cringed in mortification. He'd witnessed her weakness, her silly, irrational, ungovernable panic; truly she didn't want to face him again. If he'd guessed what lay behind her reaction, he'd doubtless pity her; if he hadn't, he'd think she was touched.

Luckily, Skinner hadn't come to rouse her until late.

Any ideas, fellow readers??

5 Truths Meme

I was tagged by Jenster. A whole buncha others have done it too. Five tidbits about myself. Only gonna tag Tara and ag since I can't remember who's done this and who hasn't.

1. I've managed to work myself into a catch 22. I want to return to school and finish the degree I started twenty years ago, but I'm paralyzed with fear. Just the thought of setting foot on a college campus to do something for myself is incredibly, powerfully frightening to me. Yet- I feel stuck in a rut and I actually want to finish school. But I'm too damn scared. So I sit here in my rut & redecorate. Want to finish school-too scared- feel stuck-want to finish school- feel scared.. Rinse and repeat. Add multiple excuses for variety.

2. I hate answering the house phone. The answering machine & caller ID are two of the best recent inventions. I love being able to screen my calls. I've gone days without answering the phone. It's lovely.

3. I'm a wanna be tech junkie. If I had the money, I'd buy that $600 video-internet-game- Blackberry phone I saw on Amazon yesterday. Really. I've got six games on my cheap little phone. Plus three jazz ringtones. I've gotten addicted to cell phone Tetris.

4. I'm thinking of getting rid of my romance TBR. There I've actually admitted to it. I don't want to read all of those romances, but I can't quite part with them either. I guess I'm kind of a hoarder.

5. I set up my birdfeeders on my front porch so I can surf and watch the birds fight over the seed & the suet as I sit here at the 'puter and surf & talk to the world. I've tons of feathered friends- starlings, jays, woodpeckers, sparrows, cardinals. A local cat sits among my plants and eyeballs the flying snacks. I don't think he's caught anything yet, but it's not for lack of trying. There is also a grown squirrel, Nutkin, who started out as a baby last year but since I provide him a free buffet he's stayed. Now he's got a full, bushy tail & isn't afraid of anything. Including the cat.
